The Challenge
Modernizing the National Power Distribution Network
As part of Saudi Arabia’s national vision for grid modernization, the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) sought to automate its medium-voltage (MV) network up to 36kV. The goal was to enhance grid reliability, efficiency, and real-time visibility across a vast and complex infrastructure. Achieving this required large-scale coordination, advanced engineering execution, and seamless integration of thousands of field devices into a unified, intelligent control system.
The Solution
Comprehensive Smart Grid Automation Deployment
In partnership with the State Grid Corporation, Shabakkat, an IPT PowerTech Group company, delivered a full-scale Smart Medium Voltage Network Automation program across Saudi Arabia’s Central and Eastern regions. The project included comprehensive site surveys, precision engineering design, and controlled field operations, followed by the installation and commissioning of over 40,000 smart MV units—including SRMU, SMRMY, and SLBS devices. Each unit was integrated into SEC’s centralized control network, enabling remote monitoring, command validation, and real-time fault detection. Through meticulous testing and performance validation, the project ensured compliance with SEC standards and established a robust foundation for digital grid management.
Results
Enhanced Grid Visibility, Control, and Reliability
The automation of SEC’s medium-voltage network significantly strengthened grid resilience and operational efficiency. The integration of more than 40,000 smart field units delivered real-time visibility and improved outage response, while reducing manual interventions and system downtime. With full remote control capability, SEC can now manage its distribution network faster, safer, and more efficiently, advancing the Kingdom’s goal of a fully digital and intelligent power grid.
