The Challenge
Reducing Carbon Emissions Across Critical Operations
As part of its long-term sustainability strategy under the Project Zero initiative, MTN Uganda sought to reduce carbon emissions and minimize generator dependency across its headquarters operations. The challenge was to implement a large-scale renewable energy solution capable of supporting continuous office operations, air conditioning systems, and campus-wide lighting — while ensuring stable integration with the existing utility infrastructure and maintaining uninterrupted operational performance.
The Solution
A High-Performance On-Grid Solar Infrastructure
IPT PowerTech designed and deployed a 600 kW on-grid solar system at the MTN Uganda Headquarters, engineered to support the facility’s full operational demand across more than 22,000 sqm of office and campus space. The installation includes 970+ high-efficiency solar panels integrated with 4 × 125 kW inverters, ensuring optimized energy conversion and system stability. The infrastructure is supported by an advanced solar distribution panel with full protection mechanisms and synchronized grid integration. To enhance operational visibility, IPT implemented an intelligent digital monitoring platform enabling real-time tracking of solar generation, utility consumption, and generator performance. The solution was designed to maximize energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and strengthen energy resilience while supporting MTN Uganda’s ESG commitments and long-term decarbonization roadmap.
Results
Advancing Sustainable and Efficient Operations
The solarization project significantly strengthens MTN Uganda’s transition toward cleaner energy operations by reducing reliance on conventional power sources and lowering associated carbon emissions. The system enhances energy efficiency across headquarters operations while supporting the company’s broader net-zero emissions target by 2040 under MTN Group’s Project Zero initiative. By integrating renewable energy with intelligent monitoring and grid synchronization, IPT PowerTech delivered a scalable and reliable energy platform aligned with modern ESG and sustainability standards.
