Strengthening Data Center Power: UPS Upgrade at MTN Uganda’s Mutundwe Switch Center
Four 500 kVA UPS Units
The upgrade features four UPS units rated at 500 kVA each, providing a combined installed capacity of 2,000 kVA.
An uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, supports connected equipment when the incoming power supply is interrupted. For facilities handling telecommunications and data center operations, this makes UPS infrastructure an important part of maintaining power continuity.
The 2,000 kVA figure represents the total installed UPS capacity across all four units.
Two Parallel UPS Pairs
The four UPS units are arranged in two parallel pairs, serving sections A1/A2 and B1/B2.
This configuration divides the installation between the two designated sections of the facility. Each pair brings together two 500 kVA UPS units within the section-based power arrangement.
Battery Storage with Protective Enclosures
The project also includes battery storage with protective enclosures.
Batteries provide the stored energy a UPS uses during an interruption to its incoming supply. Their inclusion forms a key part of the installation, while the protective enclosures provide dedicated housing for the battery storage.
A 1,000 A AC Distribution Panel
A 1,000 A AC distribution panel completes the key components of the upgrade.
AC distribution panels distribute electrical power to connected circuits and equipment. At the Mutundwe Switch Center, the panel forms part of the electrical infrastructure supporting the upgraded power system.
